How much weight can I lose while following a healthy diet?

It all depends on how active you are on a day-to-day basis. Do you have a desk job, commute by car and live in a small apartment or are you on your feet all day at work, walk around and do daily housework? If you are sedentary at home and at work, then you can expect to lose about 1 pound of fat weekly. However, if you are active, you can easily lose 2 pounds a week.

Together, we look at your lifestyle and set realistic weight loss expectations.

How many sessions do I need with a dietitian to reach my goals?

It depends on what your goals are. If you are just looking for a screening of your current dietary habits, then one session might be enough. Most often if weight loss is your primary goal, then follow-ups are the key to success. We usually recommend doing a follow-up every 2 to 4 weeks but it’s totally up to you.

I eat very healthy but am not losing weight, why?

There are several reasons why your weight might not be going down despite eating healthy or being on a diet. First, to lose weight energy in (food intake) must be lower than energy out (expenditure) meaning you must be in a caloric deficit. Quantity is as important as quality. Seeing a qualified dietitian can help you understand your energy needs for weight loss.

Another very common reason why you are not losing weight is the opposite of the former, it is not eating enough! If you are eating less than your basal metabolic rate (BMR), then your weight stagnates, consulting a dietitian can help you make sure you are eating less than what you are expending but never less than your minimum (BMR)

Thirdly, if you are exercising & lifting weights you might be losing fat but gaining muscle mass therefore your weight is not moving but your body composition is changing. If that’s the case, then tracking your waist circumference with a tape measurer is a better indicator of fat loss than your actual weight.

Lastly there are several medical conditions that make weight loss harder. If we eliminate the above possibilities, we can investigate further in that direction.
