Dietitian consultations
Good news! Most private insurance companies cover dietitian/nutritionist services in their health insurance packages. If you have private insurance, you can request to be reimbursed for part or the sum of your nutrition consultation sessions. If you do not have private insurance, you can also get a refundable tax credit for dietitian services since they are provided by health professionals.
In Canada, naturopaths are currently not regulated health professionals like registered dietitians are. In order to practice their profession dietitians must be members of the Ordre des Dietetistes Nutritionnistes du Quebec (ODNQ), a professional body which main role is to protect the public and make sure member dietitians are practicing according to the norms and keeping up to date with the science by accumulating 20 hours of continuing education every year.
Make sure to bring or to email us a copy of your latest lab test results if available and a list of your medications if you take any. If your doctor referred you to a dietitian also send us the referral.
It all depends on how active you are on a day-to-day basis. Do you have a desk job, commute by car and live in a small apartment or are you on your feet all day at work, walk around and do daily housework? If you are sedentary at home and at work, then you can expect to lose about 1 pound of fat weekly. However, if you are active, you can easily lose 2 pounds a week.
Together, we look at your lifestyle and set realistic weight loss expectations.
It depends on what your goals are. If you are just looking for a screening of your current dietary habits, then one session might be enough. Most often if weight loss is your primary goal, then follow-ups are the key to success. We usually recommend doing a follow-up every 2 to 4 weeks but it’s totally up to you.
There are several reasons why your weight might not be going down despite eating healthy or being on a diet. First, to lose weight energy in (food intake) must be lower than energy out (expenditure) meaning you must be in a caloric deficit. Quantity is as important as quality. Seeing a qualified dietitian can help you understand your energy needs for weight loss.
Another very common reason why you are not losing weight is the opposite of the former, it is not eating enough! If you are eating less than your basal metabolic rate (BMR), then your weight stagnates, consulting a dietitian can help you make sure you are eating less than what you are expending but never less than your minimum (BMR)
Thirdly, if you are exercising & lifting weights you might be losing fat but gaining muscle mass therefore your weight is not moving but your body composition is changing. If that’s the case, then tracking your waist circumference with a tape measurer is a better indicator of fat loss than your actual weight.
Lastly there are several medical conditions that make weight loss harder. If we eliminate the above possibilities, we can investigate further in that direction.
Of course! We will go through your likes, dislikes and I will provide you with a detailed meal plan with several options for each meal to make sure you meet your protein, iron and other micronutrient needs.
You have come to the right place! IBS is a frustrating condition to live with so I can totally see how a very specific restrictive diet like the low FODMAP diet can add more stress to your life. Together we will design a personalised meal plan for you with several meal options for every meal and snack in accordance with the low FODMAP diet.
While I do not recommend ketogenic diets, I can help you follow it in the healthiest way possible. The ketogenic diet however is strictly not recommended for pregnant women and not a good choice if you have hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol/triglycerides) or cardiovascular disease.
